If you are looking for a cost-free software program that allows you to slice your video files, convert them into well-known video formats, and even perform some basic edits on them, Free Video Editor is a serious option that is worth considering. It supports AVI, GIF, MKV, and MP4 for the output, together with the possibility of extracting the audio stream of your video files and saving it as an MP3 file.

You can load any AVI, MPG, MP4, MKV, FLV, 3GP, WEBM, or WMV file and split it easily into as many clips as needed. You can set what the program calls “tags” and use them as cutting points to slice an entire video file in a number of clips. Tags set manually can be updated using the “Edit tag” dialog. Alternatively, you can use this same dialog to tell the program to set a fixed number of tags proportionally throughout the file, or to set a tag every X number of minutes or frames. You can also perform manual selections using your mouse, which you can then revert in order to cut the unselected portions of the file. The built-in video player also displays a waveform graph of the audio stream, which will help you make more accurate selections. Cutting points are represented in hours, minutes and seconds, and down the millisecond for higher accuracy, and large files (longer than 4 minutes) can be zoomed in also to help you fine-tune your selection.

Free Video Editor comes with a couple of basic yet very useful editing features. These will let you rotate the image in the source video file and to change the volume level of the audio. In this sense, the name of this tool may be a bit misleading, as it is more a “video cutter” than a “video editor” as far as functionality goes. Another limitation lies in that the output profiles provided seem to be set in stone, as they won’t accept any level of customization whatsoever.

All in all, Free Video Editor is an excellent cutting and slicing tool for the most common video file formats. Most of its functionality has been designed to help you clip large video files in smaller sections easily and effectively, together with the possibility of converting your source files into popular video formats in the process.
